Ground Source Heat Pumps

A few metres down the earth remains at a constant temperature about 10 – 15 degrees in the UK. We can make use of this fact to transfer this latent heat to your home using a ground source heat pump. Heat pumps draw heat from the ground via a horizontal ground collector, or a ground probe (bore hole) or from a ground water supply,e.g., river or loch.

As with a air source heat pump extracting heat from the air, a ground source heat pump extracts heat from the ground and transfers it into heating energy and hot water.

There are 3 important issues with a gshp system:

1. The Ground Loop

These are lengths of pipe buried in the ground in either a borehole or horizontal trench depending on land type and space surrounding the building.

The pipe is usually filled with a mixture of water and anti freeze which is pumped round the pipe absorbing the heat from the ground.

2. The Heat Pump – made up of 3 main parts

a. evaporator – this takes the heat from the water in the ground loop

b. compressor – this moves the refrigerant round the heat pump and compresses the gaseous refrigerant to the temp needed for the heat distribution system.

c. condenser – gives up the heat to a hot water tank which supplies the distribution system.

3. Heat Distribution System

Consisting of underfloor heating or radiators. Underfloor heating runs at a lower temperature than radiators so is the perfect match for a heat pump and when combined they create an extremely efficient heating system.
