Frequently Asked Questions

What If I have a leak in the Underfloor Pipework?

Leaks are highly unlikely in any system installed by MMAXX. Continuous lengths of pipe are used in our installations so it is unlikely that there will be any need for pipe joints anywhere other than at the manifold. All circuit lengths are calculated in the design process and appropriately long coils of pipes are used. All MMAXX pipework is pressure tested to 6 Bar prior to, and during screeding to detect any possible leaks. If the pipework is damaged during the construction, we can joint the pipes using specially designed compression fittings.

Why Is Underfloor heating better than a radiator system?

The most appealing reason is that there are no ugly, bulky radiators taking up valuable wall space. Underfloor heating gives occupants greater freedom to arrange, decorate and furnish rooms as they please.

Is it expensive?

No. Underfloor heating should be no more expensive to install that a comparable radiator system. Running costs are significantly lower and the pipework will last for 100 years meaning that it will never have to be replaced. We will be happy to provide you with a free, no obligation quote after receiving your floor plans and discussing the project.

What does Underfloor heating run on?

Any form of fuel can be used to warm the water that circulates through the Underfloor Heating System. The most commonly used choices are oil and gas. A condensing boiler is generally the best choice as these are more suited to working at the lower temperatures used by Underfloor heating and can therefore give greater efficiency.

Are alternative heat sources compatible with UFH?

In modern times, alternative heat sources are becoming increasingly popular as gas/oil prices increase and we become more environmentally aware. Underfloor heating systems are ideal for connecting to alternative heat sources as the system operates on low temperatures (typically between 35°C and 55°C). Some of the options include solar roof panels, a geothermal heat pump or a heat recovery system. These sources of heat can be used to supplement or replace the output from the boiler and will save you even more of your fuel costs.

What servicing and maintenance is involved with an UFH system?

Servicing an Underfloor heating system is easy, as essentially maintenance is virtually eliminated. Once embedded in the floor, the PEX pipe should never be seen again and in most cases it should even outlast the building itself. The only servicing required is the normal scheduled maintenance of the boiler and regular visual checks on the activators.

Is Underfloor heating controllable?

Yes, the system is very easy to control. Generally, each room or area has its own individual circuit and its own individual thermostat. Adjusting the thermostat will open/close the activators on the maifold, controlling the flow to that circuit and the heat fed to the room. In addition there are weather compensation systems which monitor the outside temperature and maintain the system at your desired temperature all the time.

Will I be able to combine an UFH system with hardwood floors?

Underfloor heating is compatible with all hardwood flooring and wood laminates as long as the flooring is laid in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Once installed, UFH is beneficial for wooden floors as it maintains a constant even temperature over the surface of the floor. The floor surface temperature produced by the system is always designed to be considerably lower than the manufacturers threshold.

Can I have carpets on my floors?

Carpets will work with Underfloor heating but MMAXX recommend a maximum tog value to ensure heat is properly transferred into the room. This tog value varies according to floor construction and heating requirements but we will indicate this figure to customers during the design phase. When a value has been agreed, we can run our design software and produce guaranteed air and floor temperatures for each room.

Can I have Underfloor heating throughout my home?

Yes there are no restrictions on where MMAXX systems can be used.

Can I fit Underfloor heating in my existing home/building?

As the name suggests, Underfloor heating is fitted under the finished floor so to fit in an existing building requires a high degree of disruption and upheaval. If this is acceptable then MMAXX will try our best to find a solution to install UFH in your building.
